Nexplanon insertion and removal
Taos Whole Health is proud to support you in your family planning goals. Our practice offers in office Nexplanon insertion and removal.
Nexplanon is the birth control implant. This small, thin, and flexible arm implant is placed discreetly under the skin of the inner, non-dominant upper arm by a healthcare provider. After implantation, the patient is protected from pregnancy for up to 3 years. Just as effective as the pill, Nexplanon requires no daily hassle and is often called the get-it-and-forget-it birth control method.
The hormones in the birth control implant prevent pregnancy in two ways. Progestin thickens the mucus on the cervix, which stops sperm from swimming through to the egg. Progestin can also stop eggs from leaving the ovaries (called ovulation), so there’s no egg to fertilize.
Nexplanon is inserted via a minor surgical procedure, the area is numbed, and an applicator guides the implant into place. Over 94% of individuals experience no pain at the insertion site.
Removal of Nexplanon involves a minor surgical procedure and can be performed in the office through a small incision in your arm where Nexplanon is located. The area is numbed, and most individuals experience no pain.
Nexplanon is completely reversible and patients may become pregnant as early as a week after removal.
