Taos Whole Health has been accepted as the first-ever residency site for Naturopathic Doctors in New Mexico.
There is a severe deficit of residency opportunities for Naturopathic Doctors nationwide, and we are proud to be part of educating the next wave of ND’s. Our residency program will bring highly trained doctors to New Mexico, which has historically seen a shortage of primary care providers.
Only 1/3 of Naturopathic Doctors have the opportunity to do a residency program due to the lack of availability of such programs. Residency gives new doctors the real-world experience that they need to see patients in an efficient, effective, and professional manner. A major reason naturopathic residencies are not as abundant as conventional medical residencies is because medical residencies are funded predominantly by the centers for Medicare and Medicaid, and naturopathic residencies are not.
During their training, residents must work under the supervision of trained and experienced attending clinicians. While mandatory and vital, this model is not financially self-sustaining and is the reason we are writing to you now. We have already secured a small grant from the Naturopathic Education and Residency Consortium towards our resident’s salary; however, this will only cover about 1/10th of the resident’s salary. We are hoping the community can come together to support this important educational program!
Why fund our residency program?
One resident can provide 30 visits per week to low-income community members.
Our current health crisis has brought into sharp focus the severe deficit in quality trained primary care providers. Our residency program will provide valuable education to prepare top-notch doctors for a lifetime of service.
Taos County struggles with notable disparity of wealth. 20.4% of our population lives well below the poverty level and makes an average of $17k. Your donation will help us tackle these deep-rooted health disparities.
Funds collected through TWCH’s Residency Program go directly towards caring for patients with acute and chronic issues such as diabetes, obesity, pain, autoimmune disease, and much more, as well as towards nutritional education, self-care strategies, and preventative care.
Funding our residency program is more important than ever, as we are now managing a pandemic within an already existing and longstanding health crisis.
Please consider making a donation to Taos Whole Community Health—no matter what size—to help us bring a Naturopathic Resident to Northern New Mexico to provide valuable medical education and essential primary care for our community.
Please reach out with any questions. We look forward to hearing from you and working closely to make a difference in our community.
