Moxibustion

Moxibustion is a form of therapy in which dried mugwort and plant matter, or "moxa", is burned close to the skin’s surface. Moxibustion is a Chinese medicine technique intended to warm meridian points and stimulate the flow of Qi, or life energy, and improve circulation.

During moxibustion a smoldering moxa stick is held close to the surface of the skin to produce a penetrating warmth over areas that correspond to specific acupuncture points. Patients often report a flooding of warmth that radiates along a noticeable pathway in the body. This path of warmth signals that the flow of Qi has been freed in the corresponding channel.

Moxibustion is often used for pain due to injury or arthritis, digestive disturbances, gynecological and obstetrical conditions, and even depression. Moxibustion is often used in conjunction with acupuncture. These therapies are complementary and can increase effectiveness when used in tandem.
